Owens Valley Career Development Blends Modern with Tradtion
from:In 1976, the Owens Valley Career Development Center opened as a small business in Nevada. Their objective was to provide services and counseling towards jobs opportunities and career alternatives for Native Americans while keeping with tribal and family traditions.
Today, the Owens Valley Career Development Center (OVCDC) encompasses many other Sovereign Nations. The school is open to any Native American. The center covers more areas than it once did, including education, social services, and economic development markets. Their objective is incorporate traditional and cultural activities and movements while introducing modern technologies and society interaction to their people.
While the Owens Valley Career Development Center values the Native American traditions the instructors also value choice. This provides their members with better quality of life. Their focus is on education with a desire to be self-sufficient while preserving their group and individual cultures.
The Owens Valley Career Development Center offers both traditional collegiate and vocational learning courses. Some vocational courses include administration of justice, early childhood education, certified nursing assistant, and computer science, among many more offerings. Collegiate courses are blended with Cerro Coso Community College with schools like the United Tribes Technical College also taking in OVCDC students.
An important aim of the Owens Valley Career Development Center is to reestablish and revitalize Native American languages. It is their belief that not only is it important to keep the traditional languages from disappearing, but that in the past, knowing the language kept many natives alive. Teachers and students learn through written documentation, movies, presentations, books, audio tapes and guest speakers. Classes on specific languages are held for students with the addition of adult night classes. This allows the older generations to teach their children the traditional language of their people. Some of the languages taught include the Yowlumni and Paiute languages. As with many of the courses, the language courses are open to natives of many ages and can be taken anytime.
Because child care is important to any society, the OVCDC offers a caring and educational environment for children of working parents. Programs aimed at family literacy, reading and writing covers all age groups and continues throughout life. The OVCDC understands and explains the importance of understanding different forms of literature in today's societies and times.

There you can ask for a brochure or pamphlet explaining what the center has to offer and who may join.
